The mod was originally developed by a creator known online as GoldenAppleJuice, who introduced Dave as a tall, blue, humanoid figure and Bambi as a shorter, golden-colored counterpart with a wide, unsettling grin and an energy level that escalated dramatically as songs progressed.

When the mod first circulated through online communities, it earned immediate praise for the quality of its music, the strong character designs, and the entertaining contrast between Dave's steady composure and Bambi's unpredictable chaos. Playthroughs, reaction content, and highlights spread rapidly across major video platforms, reaching audiences far beyond the core modding community and turning both characters into widely recognized internet figures.

The mod then expanded significantly through its most substantial update, known as the Golden Apple Edition. This release added new characters, additional song weeks, a richer storyline, and a more polished visual identity across the board. What had started as a small passion project became one of the most recognized and widely discussed fan-made rhythm game experiences ever produced.

Bambi's escalating behavior and exaggerated expressions made him an instant subject for meme content, fan animations, and creative edits. It transformed what started as a small personal project into one of the most recognized and celebrated mods in rhythm game history. Fans quickly turned clips of his in-game reactions into meme content, animations, and video edits that spread rapidly across YouTube and short-form video platforms. He hit a rare sweet spot between comedic and unsettling, which gave creators a wide range of material to work with. His pairing with Dave, who played the calm and grounded counterpart, also helped. Reaction videos, fail compilations, and speed-run attempts helped spread it far beyond its original audience. What also contributed to Ballistic's lasting reputation is that it works as a standalone piece of music outside of gameplay. Its dramatic composition and memorable escalation resonated with listeners who had never played a rhythm game, which helped it cross into broader online spaces.
