A free sack of burlap is the smartest purchase in Dressmaker, and plenty of new players walk right past it. This Dressmaker beginner guide covers the habits that separate a flawless dress from a pile of ruined silk: reading commissions properly, packing pattern pieces, taming the sewing machine and guarding your coins in the first few hours. Cozy Lives launched the game on September 21, 2026, and the early economy has already humbled players who assumed a cozy sim could not hurt them. It can. Below you will find 12 tips, a fabric cheat sheet, a money plan and straight answers to the questions people keep searching. Grab your scissors. The cat can wait. (It cannot, actually, but we will get there.)

⚡ Quick Answer

Prototype every dress in free burlap before cutting real fabric. Read each commission's numbers as hard requirements, pack pattern pieces tightly, and turn on Sewing Assist. Slow down at corners with the S key, recycle miscut pieces instead of rebuying fabric, and never spend your last coins on materials the active commission does not need.

What Is Dressmaker? The Dressmaker Beginner Guide Starts Here

Dressmaker is a cozy crafting simulation where you run a small dress shop for a town of picky customers. You choose fabric, cut out patterns, sew the seams yourself and add decorations before handing the dress over for coins and reputation. It is single player, mouse driven and costs $14.99 on Steam.[1]

The project began as a side hobby. A free prototype on itch.io collected about 100,000 downloads in 2025, and the Steam launch arrived with more than 200,000 wishlists.[2][3] Cozy Lives is the cozy team inside Free Lives, the South African studio that publishes the game.[4]

How Does a Dressmaker Commission Work From Start to Finish?

Every job follows the same chain, and skipping a link costs you score.

  1. Measure: Take the client's measurements. You cannot remeasure mid commission, so a sloppy tape measure haunts the whole job.[10]
  2. Design: Build the dress in the sketchbook against the client's style targets.
  3. Buy: Pick fabric and trims that fit the budget.
  4. Cut: Lay pattern pieces on fabric and cut them out.
  5. Sew: Stitch the seams on the machine.
  6. Decorate: Add lace, bows and trims on the mannequin.
  7. Deliver: Hand it over for coins and reputation.

A perfect 100 percent dress needs three things at full marks: your measurements, your grain quality and your sewing line accuracy. Miss one and the score drops.[8]

How Do You Plan a Commission Without Wasting Coins?

The cheapest mistake is the one you make before you buy anything. These four Dressmaker tips and tricks live in the sketchbook.

Tip 1: Treat the Numbers Like a Contract

Every request lists target scores plus a budget, and every minimum and maximum is a hard rule. Gothic 50 means at least 50 Gothic. Flowers 0 means no flowers anywhere on the dress.[7] Late commissions stack demands, such as Quality 80, Gothic 60, Risqué 50, red or black, velvet and a 500 coin budget in one order. Watch the attribute bars as you build. A dress sitting at Gothic 15 against a target of 40 is not finished, however pretty it looks.

Tip 2: Shop With the Filter Icon

Click the filter icon beside your fabric and accessory lists to sort by type, color and tags such as elegant or gothic. Scrolling a huge list is how coins and minutes vanish. Fabric tags carry much of your style score, and a good bolt can lift a score your dress parts miss.[4] Use this cheat sheet as a starting point, then read the tags on the actual bolt, because coverage varies.[9]

Style Tag Fabrics That Tend to Fit
Casual, Cool, Workwear Linen
Formal Lace, silk, velvet
Eveningwear Silk, velvet
Risqué, Shimmering, Glamour Sequins (velvet also covers Glamour)
Patterned Wool, some linen
Simple Cotton, silk, velvet

💡 Pro Tip: Velvet covers the widest range of tags, but it also drains your budget. If cheap cotton already meets the request, buying velvet just eats your profit.[9]

Tip 3: Click Components, Not Tiny Arrows

In the sketchbook, click a component's name or setting directly instead of cycling with the small arrows. The buttons at the bottom of each component menu also adjust lengths and styles, which is how a plain skirt becomes a circle skirt in two clicks.

Tip 4: Measure Once, Then Reuse

Take your time with the tape measure, because the result sticks until that client visits again.[10] When you sew a dress for nobody in particular, load any saved client's measurements instead of starting over.[11]

What Is the Dressmaker Burlap Trick?

Tip 5: Prototype Every Dress in Free Burlap

Burlap costs 0 coins and you can buy as much as you like. The developers intended it as a mockup material, so you can cut and fit pieces before committing to the fabric you actually want.[6] Here is the routine:

  1. Open a design: Start a new sketchbook design, either a commission or an off the rack dress.
  2. Buy burlap: It is free, so buy plenty.
  3. Cut everything: Cut every pattern piece in burlap on the fabric board.
  4. Pin to the mannequin: Place the pieces to check layout and fit.
  5. Swap to the real fabric: Lay the patterns on your paid fabric using the burlap layout as a blueprint, then cut and sew.

In my experience, the first hour of Dressmaker is a lesson in how fast coins disappear. I treated it like a dress up game, bought a gorgeous bolt because it looked nice and then cut it badly. Burlap broke that habit. Once I started test fitting in free fabric, every real cut felt like a decision instead of a gamble. Real sewists call a test garment a muslin or a toile, and the habit saves fortunes in the real world too. The game quietly teaches the best habit in the craft.

How Do You Cut Patterns Without Wasting Fabric?

Tip 6: Pack Pieces Tight and Keep Them Straight

The cutting table is a spatial puzzle. Cram pieces close together, keep them straight and leave as little scrap as possible. Tight layouts save expensive fabric and protect your quality score. The mouse wheel rotates a piece faster than nudging it by hand.[12]

Here is the part many guides skip. Grain matters, because a misaligned piece caps your quality score.[8] But each commission only asks for its own minimum.[5] If a client wants Quality 75, a piece rotated to perfect grain can cost extra fabric for points nobody pays you for. Treat quality like a budget: hit the number on the request, add a small safety margin, and save perfectionism for the achievement run.

Tip 7: Recycle Your Miscuts

Cut the wrong piece? Drag it from the side of the fabric table to the recycling icon. The panel returns to the fabric as if nothing happened. It is a free do over, so use it shamelessly.

How Does Sewing Assist Work in Dressmaker?

Tip 8: Turn On Sewing Assist

Open the settings and switch on Sewing Assist. It takes some of the manual work out of guiding fabric, which makes corners and curves far kinder.[5] If your thread keeps snapping at sharp turns, this is the fix.

Tip 9: Ride the W and S Keys

Press W to sew faster and S to sew slower. Fly through long straight seams, then slow down for curves and corners, where mistakes are harder to repair.[5] A slower pace also keeps your line tidy instead of zooming through the stitch path.

⚠️ Important: Sewing accuracy is one of the three pillars of a 100 percent dress. Speed is only fun until the thread snaps.

How Do You Decorate a Dress Without Clipping Chaos?

Tip 10: Zoom and Pan Before Placing Trim

Zoom into the mannequin and pan around so your lace and trims sit neatly. Accessories can also close a small style gap, so a strip of lace can rescue a score without a full redesign.[5]

Tip 11: Learn the Accessory Menu

Highlight an accessory and right-click to delete it. The side menu lets you duplicate, rotate, scale, and raise or lower it, and the rotation gizmos handle angles. Raise a bow slightly off the fabric and it stops clipping into the dress.

Tip 12: Take the Free Wins

Pet the studio cat. The developers list petting the kitty as an actual feature, and it is the best part of any session.[1] Then use the color dropper to recolor your mannequin pink, beige, navy, brown, hot pink, blue or red. A pale dress on a pale mannequin is a great way to lose a seam.

Dressmaker Beginner Guide to Coins: How Do You Make Money Early?

Early funds are thin, and a balance near 150 coins is normal in the first hours. Players report getting stuck after the tutorial: coins gone, a failed order and no cash for the next materials. A few habits prevent that spiral.

  • Buy for the active job only. Do not stock up on fabric you cannot use yet.
  • Check requirements first. Some requests need materials your shop has not unlocked, such as sequins.
  • Sell the near misses. A dress that misses a request can still be sold to recover some value.[5]
  • Go off the rack. Finish your first three commissions to unlock selling uncommissioned dresses, which is a smart home for leftover fabric.[6]
Money Method Best For Watch Out
Custom commission Reputation and story progress Hard requirements can fail the order
Off the rack dress Turning spare fabric into coins Needs three finished commissions first
Selling a missed dress Recovering part of your spend Only recovers some value

💡 Pro Tip: Many players build off the rack dresses from free burlap bases to keep costs near zero, then spend only on accessories that add value.[11]

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop wasting expensive fabric when cutting patterns?

Prototype in free burlap first, then pack your pattern pieces tightly and keep them straight on the real fabric. Check the fabric estimate on the pattern screen before buying, and match the commission's quality target instead of chasing a perfect score. If you miscut, drag the piece to the recycling icon and try again.

What is the burlap trick in Dressmaker and how do I use it?

Burlap is a free fabric you can buy without limit. Cut every pattern piece in burlap, place the pieces on the mannequin to test layout and fit, then switch to your real fabric and copy that layout. It works like a muslin in real sewing, letting you fix mistakes before spending coins.

How do I use Sewing Assist without messing up corners?

Turn on Sewing Assist in the settings, then control your pace with the keyboard. Press W to speed up and S to slow down. Run through long straight seams quickly, but crawl around curves and sharp corners. Slower sewing keeps your line neat and stops the thread from breaking.

Can I sell off the rack dresses to make extra coins?

Yes. After your first three commissions, you can sketch and sew dresses without a customer and sell them for coins. It is a handy way to turn leftover fabric into money. Some players build them from free burlap to keep costs low.

What should I do if a commission fails because of missing items?

Check every requirement before you accept a job, because players report requests that ask for materials your shop has not unlocked yet, such as sequins. If you are already stuck, sell a spare off the rack dress to rebuild your coins, and keep a small reserve so one failed order cannot empty your wallet.

How do I fix a finished dress that will not register as complete?

Players report an occasional bug where a dress looks finished but does not register. The usual workaround is to save your game and reload it. If the dress still refuses to complete, recheck every requirement on the commission card, since one missing decoration or attribute keeps the order open.

Can I work on multiple dress commissions at the same time?

Not at launch, as far as players can tell. The worktable handles one dress at a time, and many fans have asked for multiple dress management in a future update. Plan around it by finishing the commission in front of you before you buy fabric for the next one.

How do I change thread and mannequin colors?

On the sewing screen, click the thread in the background to pick a new thread color, and choose one deliberately instead of keeping the default. For the mannequin, use the color dropper tool to switch its display color to pink, beige, navy, brown, hot pink, blue or red.

Your First Hour Plan

Dressmaker rewards patience and punishes impulse buys, which is also true of real fabric stores. Start every job by reading the numbers, prototype in burlap, cut tight, sew with Sewing Assist and keep a coin reserve. Pet the cat between steps for morale. If you have not picked the game up yet, it is on Steam for $14.99.
