Only about 35% of tracked Guardians had earned the No HUD Gameplay Stake triumph in Destiny 2 when I checked, which leaves roughly two out of three players still missing an objective on the Guardian Rank 9 list. On paper it looks tiny. You pick a Grandmaster activity, flip one switch, and your whole interface vanishes: no health bar, no radar, no ammo counter.

This guide explains what the stake really does, where to turn it on, why it sometimes refuses to activate, and how to clear it without burning your revive tokens. It also reflects the June 2026 update that moved activities back into the Director, so you are not following stale menu advice.

⚡ Quick Answer

The No HUD Gameplay Stake is a Destiny 2 Player Stake that makes your HUD invisible in exchange for extra reward score. It counts toward Guardian Rank 9 (Vanquisher) when you clear an activity with it active on Grandmaster difficulty or higher. Turn it on in the Player Stakes section before you launch.

What Is the No HUD Gameplay Stake in Destiny 2?

Bungie added the Portal with The Edge of Fate in July 2025, and it came with a modifier group called Player Stakes. Stakes are not sandbox changes. They leave enemy damage and your abilities alone and instead change the rules you play under: locking your equipment, removing your starting Special and Heavy ammo, or hiding your interface.

The No HUD Gameplay Stake is the simplest of the bunch, and Bungie described it in one line when it announced the Portal modifiers.

"The HUD is invisible."

Bungie, Destiny 2 Portal modifiers announcement, July 2025

That means everything that normally lives on your screen disappears: health and shield, radar, ability and super meters, ammo counts. The stake applies to the whole activity and your whole fireteam, so nobody gets a spare interface to borrow. Everyone is lost together, which is at least good for team bonding.

Why would anyone choose that? Score. Every Portal activity ends with a reward score built from a fireteam Challenge Multiplier, and that multiplier climbs when you raise the difficulty or add Banes, Challenges and Player Stakes. A higher score means a higher grade and a better reward package. No HUD adds score without making enemies tougher, so confident players treat it as a cheap upgrade and nervous players treat it as a trap.

📊 Key Stat: Roughly 34.7% of tracked Guardians have earned the No HUD Gameplay Stake triumph, and it is tagged Rare because so few have.

Where Does the No HUD Player Stake Show Up in Destiny 2?

You will see two names for the same thing. The Guardian Rank list says No HUD Player Stake, while the triumph says No HUD Gameplay Stake. Both point to the same modifier, and the game asks you to use it in three places.

Where it appears What the game asks for
Guardian Rank 9, Vanquisher Complete an activity with No HUD active, with the stake available on Grandmaster difficulty or higher
No HUD Expert order Earn grade A or better on Expert difficulty or higher with the stake active
Power of the Portal quest, final Training step Select No HUD and earn an A grade reward package

The Expert order also suggests the stake can be selected below Grandmaster, so check the tooltip at the tier you want.

How Do You Turn On the No HUD Gameplay Stake?

Bungie's final major update on June 9, 2026 brought the Director back as the home for activities. Portal activities still exist, but you now reach them from nodes at the bottom of the Director.

  1. Open the Director: Choose a Portal activity such as Solo Ops or Fireteam Ops from the nodes at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Raise the difficulty to Grandmaster: The rank objective is written for Grandmaster or higher, so set the tier there.
  3. Open activity customization: Find the Player Stakes section, which sits apart from Boons and Challenge modifiers.
  4. Toggle No HUD: If it is grayed out, hover over it. Since the June 2026 update, the game explains why a modifier cannot be selected.
  5. Launch and finish the activity: The objective counts when you complete the activity with the stake active, so see it through to the end.

⚠️ Important: Bungie reworked Portal difficulty and menus in June 2026. If a tier name or toggle does not match this guide, trust the in game tooltip over any older write up.

Why Is No HUD Grayed Out on Some Grandmaster Activities?

This question trips up more players than any other. Soon after the Rank 9 objectives went live, players reported that No HUD would not activate on the Grandmaster and Ultimate versions of Salt Mines, the Coil, Heliostat and Proving Grounds. The cause: No Radar was a fixed modifier on those difficulties, and the game blocks No HUD wherever No Radar is already locked in.

The fix is boring but reliable: pick a different Grandmaster activity. That list dates from late 2025, and Bungie's June 2026 pass on the difficulty system may have changed which activities carry fixed rules.

How Do You Survive a Grandmaster Run With No HUD?

In my experience, the first surprise is how often you look at screen corners that are suddenly empty. My eyes kept jumping to where the ammo counter normally sits, then to the radar, then to my ability icons, like a Guardian waiting for a bus that was never coming. Each glance cost a second I did not have. After a few attempts I stopped fighting the habit and started counting instead: shots in a magazine, grenade recharge, my fireteam's callouts. The run got calmer the moment the screen stopped being a dashboard and became a place I knew.

Five Habits That Keep a Blind Run Alive

  • Pick a short route you know by heart. Without objective markers, map memory does your HUD's job. Community advice points to short Solo Ops such as K1 Logistics.
  • Run Boons and skip extra negatives. The rank objective only needs the stake active. Add helpful Boons and leave other negative modifiers off.
  • Treat revive tokens as your health bar. Your health bar has left the building. Since update 9.1.0.1, Grandmaster Portal activities no longer remove tokens when the timer hits zero, though Conquests and Ultimate still do, so slow and safe beats fast and sloppy.
  • Use weapons you can read by feel. You will not see ammo counts, so choose guns whose magazine size and reload rhythm you already know cold.
  • Bring a team that wants the stake too. It applies to the whole fireteam, so nobody can call out ammo from a spare HUD. Use Fireteam Finder to find players chasing the same objective, and agree on callouts before launch.

💡 Pro Tip: Do a practice lap of your chosen activity with No HUD off first. Memorize doors, ammo spawns and boss arenas, then switch the stake on for the real attempt.

What a Max Handicap Grandmaster Run Looks Like

One veteran solo player stacked every power handicap on a Grandmaster run and left No HUD off, on the grounds that it adds guesswork more than difficulty and makes footage hard to watch. The run below shows that style of play.

Which Other Player Stakes Can You Stack With No HUD?

No HUD rarely travels alone. Bungie looked at a Guardian's comfortable life and asked what would happen with less. Here are the stakes documented so far, with the difficulty each rank objective asks for where I could confirm it.

Player Stake What it does
Time Bonus Adds up to 15% bonus score for finishing before the timer, and you keep scoring after it hits zero
Equipment Locked Locks your equipment for the entire activity
No HUD Makes the HUD invisible
No Starting Ammo Starts you without Special or Heavy ammo, and the rank objective asks for Master difficulty or higher
Avant Garde Restricts your weapons and armor to New Gear
Brawn Swaps in a different health model, with the rank objective set at Grandmaster or higher
Extinction Changes how revives work, available on Ultimate difficulty
Pressure Cooked Adds a time limit, available on Ultimate difficulty

Bungie also added a Focused Fire stake in the June 2026 update.

📊 Key Stat: Finishing before the timer can add up to a 15% bonus to your final score.

💡 Pro Tip: The Vanquisher list also asks for the Hunger and Brawn modifiers at Grandmaster. Guides for earlier ranks note that one activity can satisfy several modifier objectives at once, so you may clear all three in one run if the game lets you select them together. It is harder, so try it on an activity you know cold.

Is the No HUD Gameplay Stake Worth Your Time?

For most players, yes, once. The Rank 9 objective only asks you to finish an activity with the stake active, so treat it as a one time chore, pick a route you know, and respect your revive tokens. Repeating it for score only makes sense if you already play blind comfortably, because one wipe costs more than the bonus pays.

My read on the design: Bungie put No HUD at Vanquisher because it tests map knowledge and calm rather than raw aim. That also makes it one of the few Destiny 2 challenges you can beat with practice laps instead of better gear. Your Ghost will not mind. Your Ghost has been narrating your mistakes for years.

Destiny 2 closed out live service content on June 9, 2026, and Bungie said in September that it plans to bring vaulted content back. If you have not installed it yet, Destiny 2 is free to download on Steam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the No HUD Gameplay Stake do in Destiny 2?

It makes your HUD invisible for the whole activity, including your fireteam's, in exchange for extra reward score. You lose health, radar, ammo and ability readouts. It belongs to the Player Stakes category, alongside Equipment Locked and No Starting Ammo, and it counts toward Guardian Rank 9.

Why can't I select No HUD in Destiny 2?

Two common causes. The activity may use a fixed No Radar rule at Grandmaster or Ultimate, which blocks the stake, or the difficulty may be too low. Pick a different activity or raise the tier, then hover over the grayed out modifier. Since the June 2026 update, the game explains why a modifier is unavailable.

Which Guardian Rank needs the No HUD Player Stake?

Guardian Rank 9, Vanquisher. The objective asks you to complete one activity with the No HUD modifier active, and the stake can be switched on at Grandmaster difficulty or higher. It sits beside the Hunger and Brawn modifier objectives and the three Grandmaster completions on the same rank list.

Do I need a high grade to finish the No HUD stake objective?

No. The rank objective only asks you to complete an activity with the stake active, so a low grade still counts. Grades matter for the separate No HUD Expert order, which wants an A or better on Expert difficulty or higher. Save the grade chase for that one.

Is No HUD worth using for better rewards?

Player Stakes raise your Challenge Multiplier, which feeds the final reward score and grade. No HUD is a cheap score source if you know the route well. If you rely on ammo counters and radar, a failed run costs more than the bonus earns, so use it selectively.
