Blacksmithing to 300 can eat roughly 3,500 metal bars, which is less a hobby and more a hostile takeover of the auction house. This WoW Forever Blacksmithing and Leatherworking guide gives you both full routes, every rank requirement, the trainers that trip people up, and the best crafted gear at each stage of your character's life. It also compares what each profession really costs, so you can choose before your bags and your gold pay for the mistake. The game only just launched, so I also mark which steps were tested and which ones are still educated guesses.

⚡ Quick Answer

To level Blacksmithing in WoW Forever, craft stones, then Rough Bronze Leggings, Mithril Plate Pants and Imperial Plate. For Leatherworking, craft Embossed Leather Gloves, Dark Leather Pants, Nightscape pieces and Wicked Leather Gauntlets. Train at 75, 150 and 225. Skill 225 and above comes from beta data, so verify recipe colors before crafting in bulk.

What Changed for WoW Forever Blacksmithing and Leatherworking?

The short version: crafted gear stopped being a sad green detour. Blizzard confirmed more than 600 new recipes across all professions, and hundreds of them land in these two. Older recipes got stronger too, so crafting while you level now pays off instead of merely draining your will to live.

📊 Key Stat: One comparison of the game files counted 884 new recipes, including 267 for Leatherworking and 194 for Blacksmithing. Another analysis found that 30% of the best known level 60 pre-raid items are crafted, though that list was calculated before launch.

Here are the changes that affect your route and your gear:

  • Skill ranges moved: Many recipes turn grey up to 25 points earlier than in Classic Era, so old routes stall.
  • Weapon stones stack: Sharpening Stones and Weightstones now work alongside poisons, Windfury Weapon and Windfury Totem. Blacksmiths just found a customer base.
  • Portable Blacksmithing: The Sharpening Wheel, Anvil and Master Forge are camp objects, so you no longer need to haul your bars to a town forge. The wheel gives nearby players a Strength and Agility buff.
  • Repair All: Blacksmiths get an instant repair for equipped gear on an 8 hour cooldown, dropping to 4 hours at rank 2.
  • Bracer armor kits: Leatherworkers can apply temporary kits that add Spell Power, Attack Power or Stamina.
  • Tanning Rack: This Leatherworking camp object opens up advanced patterns. Early descriptions of the other camp buffs disagree, so read the tooltip in game.

Should You Pick Blacksmithing or Leatherworking?

Start with your armor. Warriors and Paladins lean toward Blacksmithing. Hunters, Rogues, Druids and Shamans lean toward Leatherworking. Then look at the bill, because that's where these two part ways.

Category Blacksmithing Leatherworking
Best gathering pair Mining Skinning
Crafts on this route About 370 About 370
Main material total About 3,500 bars About 2,500 leather, plus 530 Runecloth
Biggest single material 1,910 Thorium Bars 1,030 Rugged Leather
Best for Plate users, weapon stones, rods and keys Pre-raid gear and armor kits

When I added up both shopping lists line by line, I assumed the Thorium figure had to be a typo. It isn't. Thorium makes up about 54% of all the bars a Blacksmith uses, and it all goes into the stretch from 240 to 300. Rugged Leather is about 41% of the Leatherworking total. So the real decision comes late: if you can't fund that endgame stretch, stopping at around 225 still gets you most of the useful leveling gear for far less pain.

One thing most single profession guides skip: Blacksmithing buys from Leatherworking's world, but not the other way round. The Blacksmithing route needs about 170 pieces of leather, including Medium, Thick and Rugged. If you run two characters, one with Mining and Blacksmithing and one with Skinning and Leatherworking, the second can quietly cover the first. Your alts can run a tiny family business, and nobody has to pay auction house prices.

What Level and Trainer Does Each Rank Need?

Apprentice has no level requirement, so a brand new character can start immediately. After that, your character level becomes the bouncer at the door. Expert and Artisan also live in specific places, which is where people waste the most time.

Rank Requires Blacksmithing Trainer Leatherworking Trainer
Journeyman Skill 50, level 10 Snarl (Orgrimmar), Therum Deepforge (Stormwind) Karolek (Orgrimmar), Simon Tanner (Stormwind)
Expert Skill 125, level 20, 50 silver Saru Steelfury (Orgrimmar), Bengus Deepforge (Ironforge) Una (Thunder Bluff), Telonis (Darnassus)
Artisan Skill 200, level 35 Brikk Keencraft (Booty Bay, both factions) Hahrana Ironhide (Feralas), Drakk Stonehand (The Hinterlands)

💡 Pro Tip: Two Legacy talents help here. Working Overtime raises your chance of a skill point from any tradeskill, and Dedicated Study adds a small amount of skill to your lowest tradeskill. Take them before the expensive crafts, not after.

How Do You Level WoW Forever Blacksmithing From 1 to 300?

Buy a Blacksmith Hammer as soon as you learn the profession. It costs a few copper, and most recipes need it. Keep your grinding stones as you make them, because later steps use them. Night Elves should note that Teldrassil and Darnassus have no Blacksmithing trainer, so the nearest one is in Auberdine. Undead players heading to Bandarion Keep should buy the hammer first, because nobody near that trainer sells one.

Skill Craft Materials
1 to 25 30 Rough Sharpening Stone 30 Rough Stone
25 to 50 30 Rough Grinding Stone 60 Rough Stone
50 to 67 36 Coarse Grinding Stone 72 Coarse Stone
67 to 75 8 Runed Copper Gauntlets 64 Copper Bar, 16 Rough Grinding Stone
75 to 80 5 Runed Copper Belt 50 Copper Bar
80 to 95 15 Rough Bronze Leggings 90 Bronze Bar
95 to 100 5 Patterned Bronze Bracers 25 Bronze Bar, 10 Coarse Grinding Stone
100 to 112 20 Heavy Grinding Stone 60 Heavy Stone
112 to 125 13 Patterned Bronze Bracers 65 Bronze Bar, 26 Coarse Grinding Stone
125 to 140 24 Bronze Shortsword 120 Bronze Bar, 96 Weak Flux, 48 Medium Leather
140 to 165 29 Bronze Warhammer 232 Bronze Bar, 29 Strong Flux, 29 Medium Leather
165 to 175 15 Green Iron Bracers 90 Iron Bar, 15 Green Dye
175 to 185 10 Golden Scale Bracers 50 Steel Bar, 20 Heavy Grinding Stone
185 to 215 36 Mithril Plate Pants 432 Mithril Bar
215 to 225 10 Heavy Mithril Breastplate 160 Mithril Bar
225 to 230 5 Dense Sharpening Stone 5 Dense Stone
230 to 240 16 Heavy Mithril Boots 224 Mithril Bar, 64 Thick Leather
240 to 245 5 Imperial Plate Belt 110 Thorium Bar, 30 Rugged Leather, 5 Aquamarine
245 to 270 27 Imperial Plate Bracers 540 Thorium Bar, 27 Star Ruby
270 to 290 20 Imperial Plate Boots 680 Thorium Bar, 20 Star Ruby, 20 Aquamarine
290 to 300 10 Imperial Plate Leggings 440 Thorium Bar, 20 Star Ruby

If Mithril is overpriced on your realm, you can replace the 185 to 215 stretch with 15 Steel Breastplates, then 17 Steel Plate Helms. Compare the prices first, because this is a big purchase either way.

⚠️ Important: Everything from 225 onward comes from game data, not full playtesting, because the beta stopped at level 30. The Imperial Plate recipes come from quests given by Derotain Mudsipper in Tanaris, which require level 50 and may still require skill 265. Bring at least 250 Thorium Bars for the 5 belts and 4 quests. If the quests are locked, make Ebon Shiv and Ornate Thorium Handaxe instead, then return at 270. Magnus Frostwake in Western Plaguelands sells both plans.

How Do You Level WoW Forever Leatherworking From 1 to 300?

Skinning makes this much cheaper, since you'll kill plenty of beasts anyway. Most trainers have a supply vendor nearby for thread, dye and salt. Elwynn Forest and Tirisfal Glades are the exceptions, so stock up in Goldshire or Brill. Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs and Trolls also have no trainer in their starting zones and need to visit Ironforge or Orgrimmar.

Skill Craft Materials
1 to 30 33 Light Leather 100 Ruined Leather Scraps
30 to 55 25 Small Leather Ammo Pouch 75 Light Leather, 100 Coarse Thread
55 to 75 21 Embossed Leather Gloves 63 Light Leather, 42 Coarse Thread
75 to 80 8 Medium Leather 32 Light Leather
80 to 90 10 Cured Medium Hide 10 Medium Hide, 10 Salt
90 to 100 19 Fine Leather Belt 114 Light Leather, 38 Coarse Thread
100 to 115 15 Dark Leather Pants 180 Medium Leather, 15 Gray Dye, 15 Fine Thread
115 to 125 10 Dark Leather Belt 10 Fine Leather Belt, 10 Cured Medium Hide, 20 Fine Thread, 10 Gray Dye
125 to 130 7 Heavy Leather 35 Medium Leather
130 to 140 20 Cured Heavy Hide 20 Heavy Hide, 60 Salt
140 to 155 20 Hillman's Leather Gloves 280 Medium Leather, 80 Fine Thread
155 to 165 10 Barbaric Shoulders 80 Heavy Leather, 10 Cured Heavy Hide, 20 Fine Thread
165 to 195 36 Guardian Gloves 144 Heavy Leather, 36 Cured Heavy Hide, 36 Silken Thread
195 to 210 21 Nightscape Headband 105 Thick Leather, 42 Silken Thread
210 to 225 15 Nightscape Pants 210 Thick Leather, 60 Silken Thread
225 to 235 12 Nightscape Boots 192 Thick Leather, 24 Heavy Silken Thread
235 to 265 36 Wicked Leather Gauntlets 288 Rugged Leather, 36 Black Dye, 36 Rune Thread
265 to 300 53 Runic Leather Headband 742 Rugged Leather, 530 Runecloth, 53 Rune Thread

💡 Pro Tip: Keep your Cured Medium Hides and 10 Fine Leather Belts, because the Dark Leather Belts at 115 use them. Also learn Nightscape Pants from the Artisan trainers, since the Expert trainers in Thunder Bluff and Darnassus don't teach it. Yes, you need Artisan access before 225, which is a very Azeroth way to run a school.

The patterns that matter later are sold, not trained. Buy Wicked Leather Gauntlets from Werg Thickblade in Tirisfal Glades or Leonard Porter in Western Plaguelands. Runic Leather Headband comes from Jase Farlane at Light's Hope Chapel. As with Blacksmithing, treat everything above 225 as untested until live results confirm it.

What Is the Best Crafted Gear in WoW Forever at Every Level?

There's no final list yet. The beta stopped at level 30, so nobody can prove a level 60 ranking on launch day, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Often literally. Use this table as a shopping shortlist, then compare the stats against what you're wearing.

Stage Blacksmithing Leatherworking
Early levels Strange Copper Boots, Glowing Copper Boots, Runed Copper Gauntlets Embossed Leather Gloves, Fine Leather Belt
Up to about level 30 Veteran's Chain Shirt, Veteran's Chain Leggings Brawler's and Defender's Leather Armor and Pants, Trapper's Leather Pants
Mid levels Golden Scale Bracers, Steel Breastplate, Steel Plate Helm, Mithril Plate Pants Dark Leather Pants, Hillman's Leather Gloves, Barbaric Shoulders, Guardian Gloves, Nightscape pieces
Level 50 and up Imperial Plate Belt, Bracers, Boots and Leggings, Thorium Bracers, Radiant Belt Wicked Leather Gauntlets and Armor, Runic Leather Headband, Heavy Scorpid Shoulders, Tooled Leather Pants
Level 60 pre-raid Artisan's Tier sets and item level 65 epics, plus plans from Merchant's Favor and dungeon bosses Artisan's Tier sets and item level 65 epics, plus armor kits

Two details stand out. Leather pieces showed up on Arms and Fury Warrior upgrade lists during the beta, so don't turn your nose up at them just because you wear heavy boots and have opinions. Leatherworking also ranked first in one pre-raid analysis of which profession supplies the most useful items. Blacksmithing's value is broader, though, since its plans cover mail and plate, and its weapon stones can sell to melee players all day long.

Plan your late game around December 9, when the first raids open. Some recipes are locked behind raid content, so those won't help your pre-raid set. Blacksmiths must also choose between Armorsmith and Weaponsmith, and Weaponsmiths can go on to Master Axesmith, Swordsmith or Hammersmith. Beta reports put that choice at skill 200 and level 40, and describe it as permanent. Other testers couldn't verify the quests, so read each quest carefully before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Classic Era route for WoW Forever professions?

No. Many recipes turn yellow and grey earlier in Forever, and common Classic choices can stop paying out up to 25 skill points sooner. If you follow an old route, you will burn materials on crafts that give nothing. Use a Forever route and check the arrow beside each recipe before pressing Create All.

What level do I need for each profession rank?

Apprentice has no level requirement. Journeyman needs skill 50 and character level 10. Expert needs skill 125 and level 20, plus 50 silver. Artisan needs skill 200 and level 35. Both professions share these gates, so your character level can block progress long before your materials run out.

Should I pick Blacksmithing or Leatherworking in WoW Forever?

Pick by class and armor. Warriors and Paladins usually lean Blacksmithing, while Hunters, Rogues, Druids and Shamans usually lean Leatherworking. Leatherworking asks for fewer raw materials and looks stronger for pre-raid gear so far. Blacksmithing costs more, but weapon stones and endgame plans keep it valuable for a long time.

What gathering profession goes best with each one?

Pair Mining with Blacksmithing and Skinning with Leatherworking. Blacksmithing burns through more than 3,500 bars on this route, so buying everything gets painful fast. Skinning also fills your bags for free while you quest, because you will kill plenty of beasts anyway. Sell spare materials to other crafters later.

Can I change my Blacksmithing specialization later?

Beta reports say the Armorsmith or Weaponsmith choice arrives at skill 200 and character level 40, and that changing it means abandoning the profession and restarting at skill 1. Other testers could not confirm those quests because of the beta level cap, so check the questline in game before you commit.

How many crafts does it take to reach 300?

Expect roughly 370 crafts for either profession on the routes above, though luck matters once recipes turn yellow. Other published routes range from about 344 to 432 crafts, depending on recipe choices. Buy around ten percent extra materials for the yellow and green stretches so you can avoid another auction house run.

Which WoW Forever Crafting Path Is Worth Your Gold?

If you wear leather or mail and want an easier route to useful pre-raid gear, choose Leatherworking. If you wear plate, or you like the idea of selling stones to every melee player on your realm, choose Blacksmithing and start hoarding ore today. Either way, level the profession as you level your character, because Forever finally rewards it. Just check recipe colors above 225 before you commit a mountain of Thorium, since live data can still prove these routes wrong. Azeroth has humbled better smiths than us.
