The Characters: A Dark Fantasy Anime with Literary Roots

This beloved dark fantasy anime series is set in Yokohama and follows two rival organisations whose members each wield unique supernatural abilities. What makes it stand out is that every character is named after a real-world literary figure, and their powers are drawn directly from the themes of that author's actual works.

Dazai Osamu's ability, "No Longer Human," references the title of the real Osamu Dazai's most celebrated novel. Chuuya Nakahara's gravity-manipulating power, "For the Tainted Sorrow," takes its name from a collection of poetry by the real poet Nakahara Chuuya. This literary framing gives the series a distinctive identity that resonates far beyond standard shounen storytelling.

The fandom surrounding this series is one of the most active in the anime community. Dazai Osamu in particular has become a widespread internet phenomenon, with edits, memes, and fan art circulating constantly across social platforms. The rivalry and dynamic between Dazai and Chuuya, known to fans as "Soukoku" or "Double Black," is among the most discussed dynamics in the entire anime fandom. Atsushi, Akutagawa, and Ranpo each carry loyal followings of their own, making this a cast that resonates across a broad range of fans.
