Unkey the Onkey was created by an indie internet animator known for surreal, atmospheric, and funny short form animations. The Onkey character was first sketched in 2023 during a college class, drawn in MS Paint on a Mac in a completely spontaneous moment. The creator began sharing animated clips of the Onkey on social media, and the character's distinctive square headed design and warm absurdist humor won over audiences rapidly. The phrase "Ze Onkey is Funky" became the character's beloved tagline, and the Onkey quickly grew into one of the internet's most endearing viral internet character creations, with a passionate and growing fanbase.

The Unkey the Onkey Halloween special is a short animated skit in which the Onkey and two recurring characters from the viral animation series go trick or treating, only to encounter a bag of cursed M&M candies with unexpected consequences. Released around Halloween, the special earned thousands of likes across social media and became one of the most celebrated entries in the Onkey series. It showcases the creator's talent for absurdist seasonal humor and remains a fan favorite, with the Onkey community now looking forward to holiday entries from the series each year.

"Ze Onkey is Funky" is the catchphrase and unofficial tagline for the Unkey the Onkey character. It is used across merchandise, fan content, and community discussions as a celebration of the character's quirky, offbeat personality. The use of "Ze" as an unconventional article reinforces the playful, surreal tone that defines the entire Onkey universe. Within the fan community, the phrase has become a widely recognized rallying point and a way for fans to identify with the Onkey collectible fandom, and it appears on the character's first commercially produced plush as a nod to its cultural significance.

Beyond Unkey the Onkey itself, the viral animation series features a small recurring cast of fan-favorite characters. One is a familiar domestic figure who often shares everyday and surreal scenarios alongside the Onkey, and another is a fan-favorite recurring character who appears in several notable episodes including the Halloween special. Each character reflects the same warm, laid back, and absurdist humor that makes the series so distinctive as a piece of viral internet character culture, giving the world around the Onkey genuine depth and charm.

The "happy onkey happy life" trend is a fan driven social media movement that began on short form video platforms, inspired by the warmth and positivity that Unkey the Onkey brings its audience. Fans began creating videos, fan art, and tributes using the phrase to express the joy the character gives them, referencing the viral animation series as a genuine source of comfort and happiness. The trend reflects how deeply the Onkey character has connected with people, growing from a viral internet character into an emotional touchstone for a global community of fans who have made the Onkey a part of their daily lives.
